Katihar/Kishanganj: The alleged remarks made by JDU MLA from the Thakurganj Assembly constituency in Kishanganj district, Gopal Kumar Agrawal, regarding the Sher Shahwadi community have triggered a major political controversy. The issue has intensified after a letter reportedly written by the MLA to the Chief Minister of Bihar surfaced, heating up the political atmosphere in the Seemanchal region.

According to sources, in the letter the MLA demanded the removal of teachers belonging to the Sher Shahwadi community from BLO (Booth Level Officer) duties. The letter reportedly accuses them of influencing elections by allegedly adding names of Bangladeshi citizens to the voter list. It is also alleged that the Sher Shahwadi community was referred to as “Bangladeshi,” which has caused widespread anger and resentment within the community.

Reacting strongly to the matter, Congress National Secretary Tauqeer Alam has written a letter to Bihar Chief Minister and former Chief Minister, as well as Rajya Sabha MP Nitish Kumar, along with the JDU State President, demanding strict action against the concerned MLA.

Tauqeer Alam stated that addressing any community in such a manner is against social harmony and brotherhood. He emphasized that the Congress party has always stood for peace, unity, and communal harmony, and has consistently opposed any mindset that spreads hatred in society.

He further said that members of the Sher Shahwadi community live with dignity not only in Seemanchal but also across several states in the country, and such remarks are an insult to the entire community. He questioned whether this reflects the official ideology of the JDU, or whether such statements are being made to benefit a particular political party.

Referring to the recent voter verification campaign (SIR), Tauqeer Alam also raised questions before the Election Commission. He said that if claims are being made about Bangladeshi citizens being included in the voter list, then clear details must be made public.

Issuing a warning, he said that attempts to defame the Sher Shahwadi community will not be tolerated at any cost. Community intellectuals are holding meetings to plan further strategy, and if required, legal action will be taken and the matter will be taken to court.

Following this development, political activity in Seemanchal has intensified, and all eyes are now on the response of the JDU leadership.
